You do not need to arrive with a perfect drawing. Your job is to explain the idea, references, placement and anything you are unsure about. The artist's job is to turn that into a tattoo that works on your body.
Before you arrive
Eat a proper meal 1–2 hours before your session, drink water and wear clothes that give easy access to the area being tattooed. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours beforehand — it thins the blood and affects how ink sits in the skin. Bring reference images, but avoid collecting so many that the direction becomes unclear. If you are nervous, write down your questions beforehand.
When you arrive
The artist will review the brief, confirm the placement and discuss the design. You should have time to ask for adjustments before the stencil is applied. This is also the moment to speak up about allergies, skin conditions, medication or anything else that could affect the session.
During and after
Once the stencil is in place, check it from the angles you will actually see in daily life. During the tattoo, ask for a break when you need one and follow the artist's instructions. Before you leave, the studio will cover the tattoo and explain how to wash, moisturise and protect it while it heals.
A first appointment should feel like a conversation with clear boundaries, not a test. You can ask for clarity at every stage.
