Tattoo placement: how to choose where it goes.

Placement changes the scale, pain, visibility and long-term behaviour of a tattoo. It deserves as much thought as the design itself.

A placement should work with your body and your life. Before choosing a spot, think about how the design will look at rest, how it will move with you and how often it will be exposed to sun or friction.

Visibility and lifestyle

Hands, neck and lower arms are more visible and often exposed to work, sun and washing. A covered area gives you more privacy but may still experience friction from clothing. Consider your workplace, sport, travel and whether you want to see the tattoo every day.

Pain by placement

Pain is personal, but areas with less padding, more bone or more sensitive skin can feel more intense. A good artist can explain the shape of the appointment and build in breaks. Do not choose a placement only because someone else described it as painless.

Ageing and longevity

Skin changes, sun and repeated friction affect every tattoo. The artist may recommend a different size, line weight or orientation to help the design remain clear. The right placement is the one that gives the design enough room and suits the way your body moves.

Ask to see the stencil from several angles before the session begins. A few minutes of checking can prevent a decision you will have to live with for years.
