Tattoo pricing explained: what does a custom tattoo actually cost?

Price is easier to understand when you know what the studio is estimating: the artist's time, the design, the placement and the conditions of the work.

There is no universal price for a custom tattoo. A small, simple piece and a large, detailed cover-up can both be excellent work, but they require very different amounts of planning and time.

Hourly rates vs flat project quotes

Some artists price by the hour, while others give a project quote after understanding the brief. Hourly rates at established Prague studios typically run €100–200 per hour depending on the artist's experience. Simple pieces with a clear scope are often quoted as flat rates because the time estimate is reliable; complex custom work is usually priced per session because execution time is hard to predict until the needle is in the skin. Ask what the deposit covers and what can change the estimate.

What affects cost

Size, placement, detail, colour, cover-up work, the artist's experience and the number of sessions all matter. A clear reference, approximate dimensions and an honest note about an existing tattoo help the studio answer more accurately.

The real cost of cheap tattooing

Price should be considered alongside hygiene, portfolio quality, communication and the artist's ability to make the style you want. A rushed or poorly matched tattoo can cost more to repair or cover later. A good consultation makes the trade-offs visible before you commit.

If you need to work within a budget, say so early. The artist may suggest a different scale, simplify the detail or plan the piece in stages without weakening the idea.
